Laura van der Hoven

I was born and raised in Canada, where I studied psychology before making the move to Germany in the 1990s. Since then, Germany has become my home, but my journey has taken me across continents, cultures, and perspectives. I’ve had the privilege of traveling extensively throughout Asia, North America, and Europe, and I also had the unique opportunity to live and work in Japan, which enriched my understanding of different cultures and approaches to life.

My professional training as a systemic counselor and therapist was completed in Düsseldorf and Cologne, Germany, and I am a member of the German Society for Systemic Therapy, Counseling, and Family Therapy (DGSF). These experiences, both personal and professional, have shaped my approach to therapy, allowing me to bring a global and culturally sensitive perspective to my work.

As a mother of two wonderful adult children and after 27 years of marriage to their father before we went our separate ways, I have a deep understanding of the complexities of long-term relationships. That journey, with its joys and challenges, taught me invaluable lessons about love, resilience, growth, and loss.

At the same time, I’m finding great joy in building a meaningful connection and sharing a life together.

These personal experiences resonate deeply with my work as a systemic therapist. Systemic therapy looks at relationships as part of a larger network, understanding that each person is influenced by their connections to family, culture, and past experiences.

It’s not about assigning blame but about exploring how patterns, roles, and histories shape interactions. This approach helps couples and families see challenges from a broader perspective, fostering empathy, deeper understanding, and meaningful change.
